The secrets for a healthy long-distance relationship no one told you before

Last Update : July 29, 2019 by Noah

With the popularity of online dating,  long-distance relationships are on the rise.

In fact, a survey showed that 75% of engaged couples have been, at some point, involved in a relationship where distance was a key factor.

How to survive distance and maintain a healthy relationship?

#1 – Communication is vital

A relationship with your partner is slightly different if you live nearby and see each other frequently or if you live far away from each other and do not meet up very often.

Interacting several times during the day with your significant other is important to make your relationship work, but when you can’t physically see each other, it involves a certain commitment that will demand some extra involvement from both sides.

You would need to make sure your partner does not feel abandoned, but at the same time, he/she is not overwhelmed with your constant contact.

There’s a very important balance to respect!

That’s why the best thing you can do it’s to find the right balance. But how to do so?

First, keep in mind the time during the day your loved one is free, learn each other’s daily schedule and then set an hour to have a recurrent call.

Remember to keep your intimate life active, so, do not hesitate to video call each other, once in a while, to make sure you fulfill this purpose.

You can be spontaneous and call him/her when he/she does not expect it, but try to not interrupt any important activity/event.

Do not forget to give your partner some space as well!

#2 – Surprise each other once in a while

Let your partner you know that you care about him/her. A romantic surprise can help break the monotony of any kind of relationship.

In a long-distance relationship, you can send your loved one a love letter or a gift to shows that you are thinking of him/her.

You can even go the extra mile and prepare a surprise visit. You can plan a romantic activity together, something unforgettable that catches him/her off guard, and that will keep you two occupied during your short stay.

#3 – Avoid jealousy and trust your partner

Honesty and trust are two of the most important pillars of a serious relationship.

Emotions and feelings may run higher when you are in a long-distance relationship, but this should not be an excuse for jealousy.

To make your commitment work, the best is to place confidence in your partner and leave any distrust feelings to one side.

Focus on the positive aspects and learn to miss him/her. In such a way, your reunion will be even more meaningful!

Jealousy destroys many long-distance relationships because there’s a certain feeling of lack of control, mixed together with a lack of trust in your partner together with lots of insecurities.

If you feel jealous, the best thing you can think is why do you think you’re feeling like that?

Is it because you do not trust your partner? In which case, what are the reasons you’re still in a relationship?
Is it because of your insecurities? In which case, perhaps the best thing you could do is try to face those insecurities before attacking your partner.

A long-distance relationship does require constant work and commitment, but it also has lots of advantages. You still get to enjoy 100% of your friends and your hobbies whilst still having the full support and love of your partner.

The key for a successful long-distance relationship is to learn to set your own love and dating rules and to respect each other.
